Stephen Colbert Interviews Smaug the Dragon

On Thursday, The Colbert Report had a surprise guest in the form of Smaug the Dragon. Not in a costume or as some voice but Weta actually used their CGI Smaug creation to do an "on stage" interview with Stephen Colbert that was both fantastic to watch and quite hilarious. In part because it seems the voice of Smaug, Benedict Cumberbatch, came to play as he made digs at Colbert, himself, Sherlock and Martin Freeman. The result is fantastic and highly recommend you watch.

Stephen Colbert Covers The Hobbit For Entertainment Weekly

With the final Middle-Earth movie about to come out, mega fan Stephen Colbert introduced his take on The Hobbit characters for this week's Entertainment Weekly magazine. He was in full makeup and costume as Gandalf, Bilbo and Legolas and interviewed Peter Jackson for the issue. Colbert's love of Middle-Earth can not be over estimated as he would occasionally make references to the movies and the books at a kind of level that pretty much only a Tolkien scholar would understand while hosting the soon to end The Colbert Report. The show ending in the same week that the final Hobbit film comes out seems kind of apropos as Colbert moves on to replace David Letterman next year (and tragically gets neutered in the process). Below is the segment the covers from Report.

New Zealand Air, the "official airline of Middle-earth", has released their latest safety video based on The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies. Called "The Most Epic Safety Video Ever Made" it ties in the usual airline safety instructions with Middle-earth and some of the cast and crew of The Hobbit.

Retelling The Hobbit in 72 Seconds With Lego

Below is a Legoized cute retelling of The Hobbit in 72 seconds using the amusing, cute version that Lego has been using for its videos and games only this isn't official. Keep in mind that the below is the book version, not the movie version, but technically there are a few moments that spoil the final film for those that are not aware of the complete story.

The Hobbit: There and Back Again End Credits

In a bit of April Fools' fun, here is someone's version of the end credits for The Hobbit: There and Back Again with song "The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins" performed by Leonard Nimoy. I just like the nice artwork.

How The Desolation of Smaug Should Have Ended

A new entry from How It Should Have Ended that focuses on The Desolation of Smaug. The voice work is good but in this case not as funny as some of their past offerings.

Everything Wrong with The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

To mark the release of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Cinema Sins has released their take on The Lord of the Rings trilogy as part of their "Everything Wrong with..." series. As usual it is an amusing take on a movie's flaws, which all will have no matter how carefully try to avoid them.

Orlando Bloom, Evangeline Lilly Wrapped on The Hobbit

Joining Sir Ian McKellen, Orlando Bloom has said goodbye to Legolas for the last time as he has completed his work on The Hobbit, as has Evangeline Lilly (Tauriel). Peter Jackson marked the occasion with a note and video (below). In the video Bloom "sings" his part in the 2007 viral video "They are Taking The Hobbits To Isengard". Both videos are below. Jackson also added a note.
A day after saying goodbye to Gandalf and Tauriel, it was time to farewell Legolas. What a great day it was, with Orlando battling a serious Orc for all 12 hours of shooting - part of the Battle of the 5 Armies for the third Hobbit movie. When we finally got the day done, we said goodbye to Orlando, had a couple of beers ... and couldn't resist doing this!

Everything Wrong with The Hobbit Video

Below is an amusing critique of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey that counts all the problems with the movie. Some of the points are filming errors, many are silly and some are spot on. The result is an amusing piece that is part of CinemaSins occasional series that makes fun of Hollywood hits.

SNL: More Hobbit Skit

This week's guest host for Saturday Night Live was the always lovely Jennifer Lawrence. The episode used that as a chance to make fun of the Oscars, Hunger Games and The Hobbit. Lawrence looked outstanding in Galadriel costume where the skit previews the 18 The Hobbit movie series. The video is after the break and the full SNL episode (if in the US) can be found here.

McKellen vs McKellen

For your amusement, a short humorous video starting Sir Ian McKellen. One of the things I like about Sir McKellen and many british actors is most do not seem to have their heads buried up their rears like their American counterparts. Something like even the simple video below would be a huge headache not even worth the effort. Shame too as things like this make me like an actor more than a dozen movies he might appear in. Amusing video that inserts two "Hobbits" into Fellowship of the Ring as they are determined to do the most epic stunts possible. (via TheOneRing)

Family Guy LOTR Reference

Family Guy has one of its odd comedy gags that attempts to mimic one of my favorite scenes in the Lord of the Rings trilogy with the lighting of the beacons from Return of the King. The result didn't have quite the emotional punch as it did in Rings showing how the combination of music, editing and camera can help or hinder the emotion in scenes. (via TheOneRing)
