New Zealand Stuff is reporting that Hugo Weaving has sign on to return to the role of Elrond for The Hobbit films. The article says "The Hobbit spokeswoman Melissa Booth confirmed that Weaving would feature in Jackson's 3-D prequel to The Lord of the Rings trilogy." No quotes and no report from Peter Jackson who has been pretty open to this point about casting has given the veracity of the report some doubt. Having said that, Weaving was spotted visiting the Wellington set (which PJ posted a pic of) and the character does have a minor role in the book by providing food and shelter to Bilbo and company. If and how that role may expanded is unknown.
